Who's interested in a fall grain purchase?

Postby chase » Sun Oct 16, 2011 5:26 pm

I'd be willing to coordinate the purchase again if enough people are interested. It would be grain and chemicals only. No exceptions. Check out your inventories and let me know if you'd be interested, and roughly how much you'd want so I can estimate if we'd meet critical mass.

I'm interested. Probably 1 bag of base malt. Maybe a few pounds of specialty malts to complete a bag, if needed.

Any plans to do a hops order this year?

I think a hop order would be good, but it will not be a part of this order.

I can always take a bag of Pils Malt!
Let's try to twist an arm to see if we can get a storage area for BUZZ bulk grain(specialty grain). Knowing that grain would be avail. even if there wasn't enough purchased by individuals at this time to make a full bag order would expand many individuals specialty grain orders. ( I never ask for some specialty grains at bulk purchase time because I know that in the past Me and one other guy only want 5# each.)

I agree Greg. We've talked about it a several points in the recent past but the main problem seems to be where we can store the grain. Joel isn't wild about keeping it at the AESB (understandably), so we need a private residence to keep it at. Perhaps we can talk about it tonight at Black Dog

We still need about double the amount of grain requested to meet the minimum for a pallet. I'll leave this open until after the November meeting. If there still isn't enough desire for grain, we'll have to let it pass.

As far as storing grain at AESB goes, if it's OK with Bill & FSHN I don't see any problems, at least in the short- to medium-term. There are some complicating issues though that are better discussed offline.

I have to check my stock but may need a bag of something.

I was just wondering about this the past few days. I could be down for about 3 bags and probably some specialty grains if that helps.

I could probably store some in the garage but it is not hermetically sealed.

I'd be in for at least a bag of pale and a bag of pils. Maybe more by the time this gets rolling.

I'd take odds and ends leftovers and specialty malts...maybe a sack of pale ale malt.

I know from sad experience that mice are very good at finding unsecured grain. Bugs are also a problem especially if grain is stored warm. So I wouldn't recommend storing grain in a garage if not sealed very well against mammals, insects, and moisture.

Do we have a go or no-go on this yet?

I have a big Russian Imperial Stout and a Barleywine on deck and I am just about out of malt. Any chance anyone wants to drive up there and grab half a pallet's worth if we don't have enough for a full pallet?

I was thinking exactly that. I'm not seeing enough interest to meet the minimum. Does anyone want to volunteer? I have a truck, but getting the time on weekday would be a bit hard for me.
