Does anyone have interest in splitting a 60 pound (5G) pail of honey? I'm hoping we can get it for under $200 total.

If you are interested, please let me know how much weight you'd be willing to buy. I'm only looking for ~20 pounds.

What is the source and variety? Possibly interested in a gallon or so.

I don't have a strong preference, but if I got to choose, I'd pick orange blossom. As for the source, I was thinking of Monarch's or Dutch Gold. A lot of the local apiaries are too expensive for me.

This one is $195 with shipping included. https://www.webstaurantstore.com/monarc ... ORN60.html

Definitely go with Dutch Gold versus Monarch's Choice, the former is independently audited to verify that it is actually from the source it claims it is from, and experiences from folks using Monarch's Choice are decidedly mixed, for example: https://www.reddit.com/r/mead/comments/ ... ce_honeys/

Honeyville Colorado is also another decent source: https://www.honeyvillecolorado.com/product/886/76

This sounds interesting. I'm down for some, however...

Never made mead before. So mead makers: let's say I want to make a 3 gallon batch? How much honey would I need to buy?

That depends on how high an ABV you want. One web site says a typical honey has 1.035 psg per pound per gallon. 9 pounds (~3/4 gallon) would yield an OG of 1.105 and FG of 13% or so assuming FG of 1.006. this will, of course depend on the yeast you use, if you want it to be that dry, etc.

I will go ahead and take the extra 2 pounds if no one else wants it.
I think the order looks like this:
The Other Tim: 20#
Tim B.: 20#
Jackson 10#
Ian: 10#

That works for me. How are we going to work out the payments? Should i bring money to the next home-brew meeting? I have paypal and venmo if you prefer those methods.

Sorry, I lost track of this in the past few weeks. I'll get it settled this weekend. I'll be able to take money via Venmo, paypal (provided you do the friends or family option) or cash. I'll send those details out after I've placed the order.

I could take the extra couple pounds if nobody wants it. If it works well I may order more.

To answer Jackson's question, I typically use a gallon (~12 pounds) of honey per 5- to 6-gallon batch. That will make a "wine-strength" mead, usually moderately dry.
This seems about right: http://www.stormthecastle.com/mead/mead-recipes.htm).
